Third UK-China Business Leaders Summit highlights mutual goodwill and cooperation

The Third UK-China Business Leaders Summit, a key event aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between China and the UK, concluded successfully in London.

Held from May 27 to 29, the summit gathered over 400 entrepreneurs, policymakers, and scholars to explore diverse areas of Sino-British collaboration.

Hosted by the UK Chinese Business Association (UKCBA) and co-hosted by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in the UK, the event was supported by both the Chinese and UK embassies. The summit served as a platform for fostering business partnerships and cultural exchanges amidst current global uncertainties.

The opening ceremony featured keynote addresses from high-ranking officials, including Chinese Ambassador to the UK Zheng Zeguang, Nobel laureate Sir Andre Konstantin Geim, and Chairman of the 48 Group Club Stephen Perry.

Ambassador Zheng highlighted the resilience of Sino-British trade, which has consistently exceeded $100 billion annually, and emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation.
 
In his speech, Ambassador Zheng acknowledged current global instability and sluggish economic recovery. Despite these challenges, he highlighted the significant achievements in trade between China and the UK, noting that bilateral trade has consistently exceeded $100 billion over the past three years. He emphasized the increasing British investments in China and the positive outlook of Chinese companies towards expanding investments in the UK. Ambassador Zheng urged both nations to focus on dialogue and cooperation, exploring new avenues of mutually beneficial cooperation.

Chen Xu, Vice President of the China Overseas Friendship Association, underscored the role of people-to-people connections in fostering national relations. Lord David Willetts, Chairman of the Foundation for Science and Technology, praised joint research initiatives like the Newton Fund and welcomed increased collaboration in life sciences.

The summit also included forums on investment, women's leadership, and youth entrepreneurship, covering topics such as healthcare, fintech, and cultural innovation. The first committee of the Youth Chamber of Commerce of the UK Chinese Business Association was introduced, and new professional committees and liaison offices were established.

The event wrapped up on May 29 with a friendly golf match and subsequent business discussions, providing entrepreneurs with opportunities to discover new prospects in the evolving global landscape.
