Around 300 guests joined the celebration, including officials, business partners, as well as many of Australia's partners in the education, health, cultural and sports sectors, according to the consulate.

"Tonight is a celebration of the diverse, vibrant partnerships that have been forged between the people of Australia and the Yangtze Delta Region," Australian Consul General in Shanghai John Williams said in an opening speech at the reception.

The consul general told guests that the anniversary was a joint celebration of achievement and partnership, particularly in business.

"No region better exemplifies the strong complementarities between our two economies. Australian businesses have had a substantial impact on the dynamic growth we've seen in Shanghai and across East China over the past four decades. And both countries have benefited from this," Williams said.

He also thanked the many people who had contributed to and supported the Consulate-General's achievements, whether in an individual, business or official capacity.
