Israeli army orders eastern Gaza City residents to evacuate

The Israeli army on Thursday ordered residents of neighborhoods in eastern Gaza City to evacuate immediately amid the incursion of its military forces into the areas.

"To all residents and displaced people in the Shuja'iya area, the new neighborhoods, Turkmen, and Al-Tuffah, for your safety, you must evacuate immediately south on Salah al-Din Street to the humanitarian zone," Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said in a press statement.

Palestinian security sources told Xinhua that Israeli military vehicles entered the Shuja'iya neighborhood, located east of Gaza City, amidst heavy artillery and air strikes, prompting thousands of residents to flee the area.

The Civil Defense Service in Gaza said in a brief statement that its crews were unable to reach some of the dead and wounded in the Shuja'iya neighborhood as a result of the bombing.

Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on Oct. 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 200 others were taken hostage.
