Tragic student death in NW China prompts teachers' dismissal and safety review

A student's tragic death in a city in Northwest China has led to the removal of two teachers from their positions who had verbally attacked the student. The local education authority on Sunday expressed deep sorrow and pledged to enhance school management for a better educational environment.

The student from Yan'an Middle School in Yan'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province died after falling from a building at around 2 pm on Thursday. This followed the student being criticized and educated in an inappropriate manner and with improper words by a grade-level teacher surnamed Xu and a morals education teacher surnamed Kang in an office for the student's reluctance to participate in a group activity in the morning, the education bureau in Yan'an said in a press release on Sunday.

The local education bureau said that the school has removed Xu and Kang from their positions, with their school activities suspended for further investigation. 

The education bureau expressed their heartfelt sorrow for the death of the student and sincerely apologized to the family.

The bureau said it takes the tragedy very seriously and will work to improve citywide school safety and administration as part of their efforts to foster an enjoyable and safe education environment.
