While the thrilling victory should have been the headline, the mismanagement and security failures surrounding the event threaten to overshadow the sporting triumph.

The disorderly scenes of fans storming security, children being lifted out of chaotic crowds, and people climbing through vents and fences to enter the stadium, reflect a severe lapse in organizational foresight and security planning. These issues are not just minor hiccups. They are glaring red flags that demand immediate attention, especially with the US set to co-host the FIFA World Cup in just two years.

The decision to close the gates, only to reopen them in a desperate bid to manage the growing and increasingly distressed crowd, illustrates a lack of preparation and adaptability from the organizers. With tickets exchanging hands for exorbitant prices on the secondary market and no proper stadium perimeter or ticket pre-checks in place, the situation was a recipe for disaster. It is alarming that, in a country as experienced in hosting large-scale events as the US, such fundamental oversights occurred.

The local Miami police's statement, which blamed "unruly behavior" of fans, comes off as an attempt to deflect responsibility. Yes, fans should adhere to the rules, but it is the responsibility of event organizers to ensure that the infrastructure and planning are robust enough to handle such passionate crowds safely. The lack of visible security and officials, compounded by the intense heat in the region, only exacerbated the situation, leading to scenes of fans receiving medical treatment and crying children being comforted by strangers and police officers.

In stark contrast, China's hosting of mass attendance sports events offers valuable lessons. 

The 2008 Beijing Olympics, for instance, were widely praised for their flawless organization and security. The meticulous planning and execution ensured that despite the massive crowds, everything from ticketing to crowd control was handled with precision. Similarly, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics continued this trend of exceptional organization, even under the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Advanced technology, comprehensive security measures, and efficient crowd management were hallmarks of these events, setting a high standard for future hosts.

This event was a critical test ahead of the FIFA 2026 World Cup, which the US will co-host with Canada and Mexico. The world will be watching, and the lessons from Miami must be heeded to avoid a repeat of such chaotic scenes. The infrastructure and security measures must be reevaluated and reinforced. 

The ticketing process needs to be more stringent, with proper checks in place to prevent such incidents from occurring. Moreover, organizers must recognize and respect the fervent passion that soccer fans bring, particularly from South America, and prepare accordingly.

The organizational problems plaguing this tournament were not isolated incidents. Criticism has been levied by various coaches, highlighting a pattern of mismanagement and disregard for proper planning and security.
