After a netizen's claim of putting an urn in the parcel locker for just 55 yuan ($7.56) per year sparked discussion on Chinese social media platforms, a representative from the operator, Hive Box, clarified that the post is a rumor, as reported by media on Tuesday.

A netizen posted on July 18 that following the passing of a friend's father, the friend was unable to purchase a cemetery plot due to financial constraints and could not arrange a separate room for the urn due to limited space at home. Consequently, the friend chose to follow the netizen's advice and place the urn in a smart parcel locker.

The netizen highlighted that with the annual card, there are no additional charges for storage, making it a cost-effective option at only 55 yuan per year.

The post then quickly triggered hot debate among netizens, with some expressing confusion and disapproval over the decision to place the urn in a smart express delivery locker, while others questioned the authenticity of the story, suggesting it might be a fabrication.

A Hive Box customer service staffer said on Tuesday that their lockers have strict guidelines prohibiting the storage of items which included human ashes, and the incident described in the online post was solely a rumor, according to media reports.

The netizen also made a statement of apology later on Tuesday, acknowledging the specific requirements of Hive Box lockers which include a list of prohibited items, advising proper storage in designated places in accordance with civil affairs regulations.
