Free Olympic viewing areas hidden in parks
Imagine lounging on a lawn under the shade of umbrellas, enjoying snacks and drinks while watching live Olympic broadcasts on a giant screen. It's a dream come true, and the best part? There are more than a dozen of these spots around Paris!
During a recent stroll through the 16th arrondissement, the Global Times stumbled upon one such viewing area tucked away in a serene garden by the roadside. The area was dotted with Olympic-themed decorations - volunteers in green shirts, lavender-colored signposts, and event posters.
Upon venturing deeper, these elements gradually faded away. With many locals on vacation during the Olympics and most shops closed, the streets seemed eerily quiet and empty.
A banner reading "Paris 2024 Olympics" catches one's eye. Curiosity prompts one to follow the banner to a discovery of an iron gate guarded by security personnel with metal detectors.
After a brief security check, one walks down a path lined with colorful wildflowers and soon comes upon a large TV screen. This is the elusive free Olympic viewing area. During the Olympics, the Paris city government has set up one or two outdoor screens in each arrondissement (excluding the 7th) to allow the public to enjoy the Games.
The viewing area at the park makes the most use of the existing facilities: The giant screen faces a large circular seating area with tables and umbrellas, ensuring comfort regardless of the weather.
Behind the screen is a food stall, providing refreshments for spectators. The viewing area is brimming with sport-themed elements. On one side of the screen, local children play a simplified version of golf, striking poses with their miniature clubs. Behind the seating area, a graffiti zone features a huge board adorned with Olympic event logos, inviting visitors to color in the designs.
Even though there were no major events on that day, the area was still quite popular, with many families making the most of the outdoor experience.
It's clear that these viewing spots hold significant appeal for Parisians. After all, who could resist the chance to watch the Olympics in such a relaxed and inviting environment for free?
