Liu Yuejin, a former member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, has been arrested on suspicion of bribery, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) announced on Tuesday.

Liu’s case was handed over to prosecutors for examination and prosecution following the conclusion of an investigation carried out by the National Commission of Supervision. The case is under further investigation, said the SPP.

According to an official statement released by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision on September 11, Liu has been expelled from the CPC for serious violation of laws and regulations.

Liu has lost his ideals and convictions, and has been disloyal to the Party and obstructed investigations into his conduct. Liu was found to have accepted invitations to banquets as well as ill-gotten gifts and money, kept classified documents without authorization, and engaged in power-for-money deals, according to the statement.

Liu’s acts constituted severe breaches of Party discipline and serious duty-related violations, as well as the suspected crime of taking bribes, the statement said.

According to public information, Liu was born in January 1959 in Ningyuan, Central China’s Hunan Province. He joined the CPC in September 1977 and began working in November 1974. He holds a bachelor’s degree in law from Southwest University of Political Science and Law, majoring in criminal investigation.

He used to serve as an assistant minister of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) and also served as deputy director of China’s National Narcotics Control Commission and counter-terrorism commissioner of the MPS, according to media reports.
