During the China-Thailand "Commando 2024" joint army training held between China and Thailand in Kunming, Southwest China's Yunnan Province, advanced simulation technologies and artificial intelligence innovations, including robotic dogs and bird-like ornithopters, were prominently showcased.

These cutting-edge technologies enhance counter-terrorism efforts and improve the capabilities of China's modern military equipment across various scenarios. Experts suggest that this development not only strengthens domestic operations but also helps China better position itself to export military technologies.

The China-Thailand "Commando 2024" joint army training marks the seventh event of the "Commando" series of joint training held between the Chinese and Thai militaries, according to China Military Online.

Focusing on joint counter-terrorism operations, the joint training included such subjects as special demolition blasting, helicopter landing, joint search and suppression, and others. It aimed to strengthen the joint operational capabilities of the two armies and inject more positive factors into regional stability.

During the training, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) showcased advanced equipment such as robotic dogs and bird-like ornithopters, demonstrating them to Thai military personnel on-site, according to a video released by China Central Television on Wednesday.

The robotic dog possesses characteristics such as mobility, flexibility, and a high level of intelligence. In special operations, it can assist special forces members in conducting close reconnaissance and shooting actions, according to CCTV.

The training was set against the backdrop of counter-terrorism operations.

The reconnaissance team first utilized the training equipment to conduct multi-dimensional reconnaissance. Subsequently, the strike team engaged in targeting the terrorists' hideouts. At the same time, firepower targeted another terrorist stronghold, according to media reports.

Drones were on standby in the air to pursue fleeing targets. After the training concluded, military personnel from China and Thailand engaged in discussions and learning about the training equipment.

This is not the first time the PLA has brought unmanned equipment to a joint exercise with another country, as its robot dog attracted media attention during the Golden Dragon-2024 joint exercise in Cambodia, and China-Laos Friendship Shield-2024 joint drill in July this year.

Against the background of fast development in unmanned technologies and their wide application in real combat in recent conflicts elsewhere in the world, China is ramping up exploration and application of drones and robots, as well as their counters, Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times on Thursday.

Introducing these technologies to joint drills abroad shows that the PLA is actively testing their capabilities in unfamiliar environments and circumstances, while also introducing them to friendly militaries in a move to deepen friendship, widen exchanges and enhance pragmatic cooperation, Song said.

It is learned that China and Thailand have decided to carry out instructional training on subjects including reconnaissance equipment operation. Besides, the two sides will hold training exchanges at a national counter-terrorism training base. During the joint training scheduled to last until October 25, the participating troops of the two armies will also conduct a series of cultural exchange activities to promote their traditional friendship, media reported.
