News of the upcoming launch of Huawei's Mate 70 series smartphones quickly became a trending topic on Weibo on Monday morning, with consumers eagerly anticipating the integration of cutting-edge innovations.

Yu Chengdong, Huawei's executive director, said on the Chinese social media platform that the company is set to launch "the most powerful Mate in history" in November. The post didn't reveal any further details about the smartphone.

Yu's remarks quickly sparked widespread enthusiasm among consumers. "Only the Mate can surpass the Mate," a netizen commented under Yu's post. "Huawei once again touted Mate as 'the most powerful ever,' raising expectations even higher," another netizen said.

The market expects the new phone to feature the latest HarmonyOS NEXT  - Huawei's recently launched operating system widely reported as the first fully homegrown mobile operating system in China.

Competition in the smartphone industry has many core aspects. Huawei has been seeking self-reliance in the technologies, reducing its vulnerability to external restrictions, Liu Dingding, a veteran industry observer, told the Global Times on Monday.

Despite the relentless crackdown by the US in recent years, the Chinese tech company has made such impressive strides, attracting unprecedented attention to its new products, Liu said, predicting that the new smartphone's operating system, display and battery technology will all see further upgrades.

In August 2023, Huawei unveiled its Mate 60 series smartphones featuring advanced technologies, sparking global interest. The launch also reversed negative market expectations for Huawei's key smartphone business performance.

Huawei captured a 15.3 percent share of China's smartphone market in the third quarter, ranking third overall. Since its return with the Mate 60 series, the company has recorded double-digit year-on-year growth for four consecutive quarters, according to data tracked by IDC.

Another quarterly report released by TechInsights showed that Huawei's HarmonyOS saw its market share grow from 13 percent to 15 percent in the third quarter, placing it behind Apple's iOS and Android.

Pressure and restrictions from the US have not only failed to stifle the development of Chinese tech companies but also compelled them to achieve innovative breakthroughs, Liu said.

Huawei saw its sales revenue increase by 34.3 percent year-on-year to 417.5 billion yuan ($58.85 billion) in the first half of this year, said the company on August 29.

It's not just Huawei. Xiaomi, iFlytek and a number of other Chinese tech companies are continuously launching eye-catching innovative products. In many areas, such as battery technology, China has taken the lead on the global stage, Liu noted.

As of the end of 2023, Xiaomi had won more than 37,000 authorized patents globally, with approval pending for an additional 30,000 patents, according to the company.
