In a modest dress, she plunges into the depths to find the perfect pearl. As the scene shifts, she is seen again wearing flawless makeup, dancing as she tries to offer the valuable pearl to clients, hoping to exchange it for her freedom from her master.

The plot is from The Story of Pearl Girl, the latest series starring Chinese actress Zhao Lusi, currently airing on a domestic video platform. Zhao plays Duan Wu in the drama, a former pearl diver who rises from humble beginnings to become a prosperous merchant.

The show premiered on Netflix's Hong Kong and Taiwan regional platforms on November 5. On November 8 and 9, it topped the drama charts in both regions for two consecutive days. The series will later be translated into multiple languages and made available in over 190 countries and regions.

In an interview with the Global Times, Zhao shared her experiences of filming the drama, insights on her character, key reasons behind the success of Chinese dramas abroad, and her thoughts on the responsibility of spreading Chinese culture on the international stage.

To portray Duan's journey, Zhao had to wear various costumes and makeup styles to reflect the character's growth and changing status over time. 

"In history, these hairpieces symbolized vitality, almost like a blossoming life," Zhao shared. "I love that we incorporated this visual detail - it makes the character's journey feel all the more real."

Duan's path to success is filled with hardships. She endures grueling working conditions as a pearl diver, diving in treacherous waters to survive before she finds her place in the trade. Despite facing constant adversity, Duan's story is one of perseverance and self-determination. 

"What makes Duan Wu special is that she didn't start out with some grand dream," Zhao explained. 

"She simply worked hard, one step at a time. It's a very human approach to ambition, which I think resonates with everyone."

"I hope people are inspired to keep pushing forward, just like Duan Wu," Zhao added. "Working hard, step by step, is often the best way to achieve what you want."

In addition to showcasing the struggles of ordinary people, the series also explores the business journey of the female lead, portraying the inner workings of ancient China's jewelry industry, from production and logistics to marketing. 

"We define this series as an 'ancient Chinese jewelry business drama,'" said Zhang Yuanhuan, the series' chief producer.

The female lead's story begins in Hepu, an important port on the Maritime Silk Road in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, moves through Guangzhou in South China's Guangdong Province, and travels on to the Hexi Corridor, a key route along the overland Silk Road. The plot unfolds as the characters journey through various Silk Road posts, allowing viewers to explore the ancient trade route while embarking on a business adventure.

Chinese dramas, including the historical dramas, have become a regular presence in Asia, with stable markets and audiences in countries such as South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan, according to a report by the Xinhua News Agency.  

In Zhao's eyes, the increasing global popularity of Chinese dramas stems from a blend of excellent storytelling and universal values.

"I think China's 5,000-year history and culture are intriguing to international viewers," the actress said. "Chinese historical dramas offer a fresh, direct way for other peoples to experience our culture."

She said that Chinese historical dramas, in particular, offer a unique opportunity to showcase the nation's rich history and values. 

Beyond the aesthetics of the sets, costumes, and performances, Zhao noted that these stories help audiences connect with China on a deeper level.

The themes of The Story of Pearl Girl - family, love, friendship - are familiar across cultures. "Emotions are universal," Zhao added. "These themes are the purest and most genuine experiences. I believe that's what resonates deeply with audiences around the world."

Zhao's popularity has grown significantly in recent years, leading her to become one of the representatives of Chinese dramas for her fans abroad. She has over 4.58 million followers on Instagram.

During an interview with the Global Times in December 2023, Cambodian princess Jenna Norodom shared that her favorite Chinese TV drama is Hidden Love, a romantic drama by Zhao. 

For Zhao, the responsibility that comes with this admiration is something she embraces wholeheartedly. "As an actress, I feel a duty to share Chinese culture, to give fans and viewers a glimpse of the beauty of our heritage."

In Zhao's view, performers can play a crucial role in cultural exchanges by helping bridge the gap between cultures. 

"I think actors and actresses have a unique power to spread positive energy and to introduce our culture to new audiences," Zhao said. "Chinese dramas, including historical series, have a strong global reputation. I feel it's our duty to promote them and share that strength with the world."
