Local authorities in Zhuhai, South China’s Guangdong Province, held a meeting on Saturday evening, emphasizing the need to focus on the follow-up work of a car ramming incident and make every effort to ensure safety, maintain stability, and prevent risks.

The People's Procuratorate of Zhuhai approved on Saturday the arrest of the suspect surnamed Fan involved in the car ramming incident on the suspicion of endangering public safety by dangerous means, state broadcaster CCTV reported. A total of 35 people were killed and another 43 injured after the car ramming incident at a sports center in Zhuhai on November 11, the city’s public security bureau said. The 62-year-old suspect, a divorced man surnamed Fan, was quickly brought under control by the police as he was fleeing the scene, the bureau said.

The standing committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Zhuhai city committee held the meeting, calling for handling the case’s follow-up with the utmost dedication to the Party and the people. It underscored the importance of learning lessons from the incident, fostering risk awareness and a bottom-line mindset, conducting deep reflection and identifying problems, and quickly addressing shortcomings, according to a statement published by the official WeChat account of Zhuhai city government on Sunday.

It also called for a thorough analysis of the new challenges brought by changes in the social structure and urged taking higher standards and stricter requirements to ensure risk prevention, safety, and stability, in a bid to continually strengthen the social security and public safety, and effectively safeguard the lives of the people and maintain social stability.

The meeting emphasized the need to mobilize high-quality medical resources and make every effort to provide the best treatment for each injured person, aiming to minimize fatalities and disabilities caused by the injuries. At the same time, while ensuring the physical and mental well-being of the injured and their families, comprehensive and thoughtful follow-up arrangements must be made to help resolve additional practical difficulties they may face.

The meeting also urged to investigate the case with high quality and efficiency, find out the truth as soon as possible, and punish the perpetrator severely in accordance with laws. Information about the case should be released in an objective manner to ensure fairness for the public and restore social stability, it stressed.

The meeting required to learn from the incident to address risks at the source, comprehensively strengthen public security measures at communities, and carry out thorough inspections, crackdowns, and rectification actions. Patrols and security checks in densely populated areas and key locations should be reinforced to promptly eliminate potential safety hazards and effectively safeguard public safety in the society.

The meeting stressed further strengthening of safety management in public places, which includes implementing pedestrian-vehicle separation and upgrading security infrastructure.

The meeting also urged vigilance in ensuring production safety, focusing on key industries such as road traffic, construction projects, hazardous chemicals, industrial and trade sectors, and special equipment. It also called for continual advancements in risk identification and mitigation efforts to firmly uphold the bottom line of preventing major accidents.
