The Chinese central government firmly supports the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's efforts to safeguard national security and punish activities that harm the national security according to the law, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Friday, in response to reports that a US State Department spokesperson announced on Tuesday new visa restrictions on Hong Kong officials for implementing the National Security Law (NSL) for Hong Kong.

Lin condemned US interference in China's internal affairs and attempts to undermine Hong Kong's rule of law.

The US should respect China's sovereignty and Hong Kong's rule of law, abide by international law and the basic norm governing international relations, and avoid interfering in Hong Kong affairs. If the US insists on having its own way, China will take resolute countermeasures, Lin warned.
