In response to a video circulating online showing "a police officer assaulting a student" in Zhangyi town, Yuanzhou district of Guyuan, NW China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, local police released a briefing on Sunday regarding related investigation. According to the briefing, the involved police officer's administrative position has been revoked.
The briefing said that local police station of Zhangyi town received a call on Friday around 3 pm from a resident reporting that his/her child had been assaulted at school by another student. Deputy Chief surnamed Wang led the on-duty officers to the scene immediately. Upon arrival, two third-grade students from the school stated that they had been repeatedly beaten by a sixth-grade student surnamed Ma.
The officers proceeded to register the information of those involved, verify the situation, and console the injured students and their families. During this time, Ma left the scene on his own. Wang and auxiliary officer Dai then went on to search for Ma. When they found Ma, Wang kicked and struck Ma before taking him back to the teacher's office to wait for his parents. The incident captured in the video that went viral occurred when Ma was brought back by Wang and Dai.
Following the incident, the local public security bureau of Yuanzhou district assisted Ma's parents in taking him to hospital for examination and treatment. According to hospital CT scans, ultrasounds, and an on-site examination by a doctor, Ma sustained mild soft tissue contusions on his face and lower back. On Saturday, the Guyuan police bureau suspended Wang's duty, and issued a apology to Ma's family.
On Sunday, Guyuan police bureau made the decision to revoke Wang's administrative position.
Addressing the misconduct during law enforcement, the local public security bureau vowed to strengthen the construction of team discipline and conduct, effectively enhance law enforcement capabilities, and sincerely accept supervision from all sectors of society, said the police briefing.
This incident involving school violence sparked heated discussion online, with one Weibo user commenting, "Violence is never the best solution to a problem."
Another Weibo user echoed this view, saying, "Bullies should be punished, but law enforcement should not resort to violence."
The incident of a sixth-grade student assaulting younger students, which occurred on Friday, was not a case of prolonged bullying but an isolated incident, a staff of the local education bureau told Xiaoxiang Morning News on Sunday.
