China has always opposed unilateral sanctions that lack international law basis and are not authorized by the United Nations Security Council, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Tuesday in response to the European Union reportedly is proposing to sanction several Chinese firms it claims helped Russian companies develop attack drones that were deployed against Ukraine.

On the Ukraine issue, China has committed to promoting peace and dialogue, and has never provided weapons to either party in the conflict, strictly controls the export of dual-use military and civilian items, and even the export of civilian drones, and opposes using civilian drones for military purposes, Mao added.

The European Union is proposing to sanction several Chinese firms it claims helped Russian companies develop attack drones that were deployed against Ukraine, Bloomberg News reported on Monday.

Normal exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Russian enterprises are not aimed at third parties and should not be interfered with or influenced by them, Mao said.

Currently, most countries, including those in Europe and the US are conducting trade with Russia. We urge the European side not to apply double standards and to stop targeting Chinese companies without factual basis, and refrain from slandering or shifting blame onto China, the Chinese FM spokesperson said.

China will take necessary measures to firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, Mao emphasized.
