In order to better serve urban construction and improve living conditions, State Grid Nanjing Power Supply Company has carried out phased renovations on the 220-kilovolt Xiaotie Line operating in the region in accordance with the construction plan of Yanziji New Town. The line section renovated in this phase is the overhead line between Tower No. 18 and Tower No. 21 on Yancheng Avenue of the 220-kilovolt Xiaotie Line. This section of the line has been moved underground and laid in the comprehensive utility tunnel of Yanziji New Town, and the GIL line construction method with greater transmission capacity has been adopted.

According to calculations, by 2030, the power supply load of Yanziji New Town in Nanjing will increase by nearly 150 percent. "If traditional cables are used for power transmission, it will not be able to meet the electricity demand for the future development of this area. So we have adopted the GIL equipment with a three-phase common box of mixed gas to replace the use of cables from a long-term perspective," said Lu Lixiang, the monitor of the cable maintenance team of State Grid Nanjing Power Supply Company.

It has been reported that this section of the line has applied a combination of multiple technologies for the first time, such as insulation with a mixed gas of sulfur hexafluoride and nitrogen, and the direct connection between GIL and cables. This innovative approach has the advantages of being low-carbon, low-cost, environmentally friendly, and stable. In addition, the project has also enclosed three-phase conductors in the same metal shell. While leaving above-ground space for the surrounding development, this can save more than 50 percent of the space in the comprehensive utility tunnel.
