To many Chinese people, Sanya in South China's Hainan Province is a name that has become synonymous with tropical allure and seaside relaxation.

The names like Yalong Bay and Sanya Bay have earned their fame as paradisaical beaches, attracting sun-seekers not only from northern China, but also from across the globe thanks to the visa-free policy on the island of Hainan.

But Sanya holds its experiences that extend far beyond the colorful seaside.

Diverse rainforest

The Yanoda rainforest zone is one of the examples to show Sanya's ecological and cultural diversity beyond the beaches. Located precisely at 18 degrees north latitude, this rainforest is a haven of biodiversity.

Island exploration

Local tourist industry insiders told the Global Times the inflow of tourists to Sanya this year is relatively smaller than 2023, as the once long queues to the iconic islands in Sanya like Wuzhizhou and Xidao were not seen in November-the month considered the starting point for Sanya's peak season.

West Island, situated just off Sanya Bay, is a typical mini-world to itself. The fishing village on the island is a charming enclave of history and tradition.

The houses constructed from ancient coral are not only a marvel of engineering but also a link to the island's past. These structures, with their unique textures and shapes, have withstood the test of time and the elements.

Some of the old coral houses have now been transferred into exhibition halls, showcasing the island's local aquatic characters.

A floating library, namely Haishang Shufang, or Library on the Sea, fashioned from three old fishing boats, is a symbol of innovation and creativity.

It floats serenely on the water, with its interior a cozy space filled with books and postcards. Here, one can while away the hours, reading and reflecting, while the sound of the waves provides a soothing backdrop.

The island also offers opportunities for water sports and beach-combing. Snorkeling in the surrounding waters reveals a vibrant underwater ecosystem, with colorful corals and schools of fish darting about.

The island's modern-day history is also being told by a memorial hall dedicated to the Xidao women's militia company, a site that showcases the glorious journey and heroic deeds of this extraordinary militia force.

It features a rich collection of historical photos, real objects, and detailed text descriptions. Here, visitors can see the radios, flashlights, shell casings, and other precious items used by the women militia, which was established in 1959, vividly reproduce the development and training of the Xidao women's militia company and their extraordinary growth experiences.

Through the exhibitions, visitors could have a more in-depth understanding of the glorious history and development process of the local women's militia company who played an important role in safeguarding the country's coastal defenses, demonstrating the tenacity and bravery of women.

Seafood craze

The local cuisine is a delightful fusion of flavors. With its proximity to the sea, fresh seafood is a staple. Grilled lobsters, with their succulent meat and buttery flavor, are a favorite among diners.

Steamed fish, cooked to perfection and seasoned with local herbs and spices, melts in the mouth. Crabs, prepared in a variety of ways, from spicy stir-fries to creamy curries, are a must-try.

The influence of the ethnic cultures can be seen in dishes like the Li's bamboo tube rice, which imparts a unique smoky flavor to the rice, and the Miao's sour fish soup, with its tangy and spicy broth.

In recent years, Sanya has witnessed significant development in its infrastructure, especially those which are close to the duty-free shopping malls.

Luxury resorts and hotels have sprung up, offering world-class amenities and services. These accommodations range from beachfront villas with private pools to high-rise hotels with panoramic views of the ocean.

There are still many other places that deserve to explore, such as iconic cliff carving Tianya Haijiao and the Buddism Nanshan Temple where you can see the world's largest and tallest white-robed Goddess of Mercy statue.
