A rare black bear attack occurred in Beichuan county, Southwest China's Sichuan Province recently, leaving two villagers injured but in stable condition, according to local authorities.

The incident happened around 5 am on November 30 when 58-year-old carpenter Mu Guangcai and his wife, surnamed Wu, were startled by their dog barking. According to media reports, Wu opened the door and was immediately knocked down by a black bear. Hearing her cries, Mu rushed downstairs and confronted the bear with a hammer and later an axe. With help from their dog, he managed to subdue the bear and called for help.

Both victims are currently hospitalized, with Wu suffering injuries from her head and chest, while Mu sustained scratches and a dislocated arm. Medical expenses are being covered by local government, and forestry authorities are expected to take the responsibility.

Villagers said this marked the first black bear sighting in the area, although wild boars are commonly seen. The 100-kilogram bear had been spotted nearby the day before, but no warnings were issued.
