The procuratorial organ in Xinyu city, East China's Jiangxi Province has filed a public prosecution against Mao Qi, former Party chief of Wannian county in Shangrao, for suspected bribery. The case is currently under further processing, according to a statement from the website of the China's Supreme People's Procuratorate on Thursday.
According to the statement, the Xinyu city People's Procuratorate in Jiangxi charged the defendant Mao with taking advantage of his positions as the director of the office of the talent work leading group of the Shangrao Municipal Committee, deputy secretary of the Wannian County Party Committee and county head, and secretary of the Wannian County Party Committee, to seek benefits for others.
Mao also exploited his power and position, through the actions of other officials in their official capacities, to obtain improper benefits for others. Mao illegally accepted property from others, with the amount being particularly large, and should be held criminally responsible for accepting bribery in accordance with the law.
During the prosecution review stage, the procuratorial authority informed the defendant Mao of his litigation rights in accordance with the law, and lawfully interrogated him while also listening to the opinions of his defense attorney.
Mao has been expelled from the Communist Party of China and dismissed from public office over serious violations of Party discipline and laws, Xinhua News Agency reported in November.
According to media reports then, the investigation by local disciplinary authorities found that Mao violated Party leadership's eight-point decision on improving conduct by accepting banquets or travel arrangements that may affect the fair execution of his official duties.
He was also found to have been untruthful during organizational inquiries, engaged in irregularities to benefit others in personnel matters, violated personal conduct rules by engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate, and engaged in corrupt practices by using his position for personal gain in project contracting and fund disbursement, including unlawfully accepting significant amounts of money.
