On October 1, 1949, Macao's first five-star red flag was raised at Hou Kong Middle School. For 75 years, the school has maintained this tradition of flag-raising ceremonies. Iao Tun-ieong, the current principle of the school, explained why the school had kept this tradition – We must respect the national flag and honor our country because we are Chinese.
