In response to a question about the hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Friday that China has always adhered to a responsible attitude toward the development of cross-border rivers. The development of hydropower on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River aims to accelerate the development of clean energy, address climate change, and mitigate extreme hydrological disasters.
The development of hydropower on the Yarlung Zangbo River has undergone several decades of in-depth research, and measures have been taken to ensure project safety and ecological protection, so it will not have adverse impacts on the downstream areas, said Mao.
We will continue to communicate with downstream countries through existing channels and strengthen cooperation on disaster prevention and mitigation to benefit the people of the river basin, Mao said.
