The Zhuhai Intermediate People's Court on Friday publicly tried and sentenced Fan Weiqiu, who had rammed his car into the crowd at a sports center in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province, to death with deprivation of political rights for life for endangering public safety by dangerous methods, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
In the incident perpetrated by Fan, 35 people died and 43 others were injured, according to a previous release from Zhuhai Public Security Bureau.
The court found that Fan, frustrated by his failed marriage and dissatisfied with the divorce settlement, decided to vent his anger by intentionally driving into the crowd. On the evening of November 11, Fan drove his vehicle into a group of people exercising at the Zhuhai sports center in Xiangzhou district, causing significant casualties.
The court held that Fan's motives were despicable, the nature of the crime was extremely severe, the method was particularly brutal, the consequences were grave, and the social harm was immense, warranting a strict legal punishment.
During the trial, the prosecution presented relevant evidence, and Fan and his lawyer cross-examined the evidence. Fan made a final statement and admitted his guilt in court.
Family members of some victims, along with representatives from the National People's Congress, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and members of the public, were present at the trial and sentencing.
