The recent news of China's major military equipment development has attracted significant attention worldwide. One of the much-discussed developments is China's first Type 076 amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan, which left the dockyard on Sunday morning. For instance, the Financial Times said the ship "significantly strengthens Beijing's ability to project power globally," adding to China's capabilities in the event of "an invasion of Taiwan." Bloomberg claimed that this development occurs as "the Chinese navy ramps up capabilities amid growing territorial tensions."

Interpreting the development of military equipment solely as a "projection of power" or "preparation for invasion" is arbitrary and one-sided. Such interpretations overlook the legitimacy and necessity of China's construction of this type of ship to protect the country's maritime rights and interests as well as to maintain regional stability.

Additionally, they fail to mention the sources of tension in the Asia-Pacific region. Judging by the military dynamics in recent years, external powers have frequently deployed warships and warplanes in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Straits. Therefore, it is entirely logical for China, as a regional power, to strengthen its self-defense capabilities.

However, in the narrative of some Western media outlets, the responsibility for regional tensions is often attributed solely to China, without acknowledging the role of external forces. This kind of selective blindness is not the hallmark of responsible journalism.

In fact, outsiders should view China's legitimate military development with an open mind. For decades, China has consistently pursued a defensive national defense policy, insisting on resolving differences through dialogue and consultation. The People's Liberation Army has also engaged in practical cooperation with the armed forces of neighboring countries across various fields. By providing public security products and addressing hot spots and sensitive issues in a prudent manner, it plays an important role in maintaining regional peace and stability.

Just like many other major achievements, Type 076, one of the largest warships in the world to date, is the brainchild of China's ability to enhance independent innovation in defense science and technology. China's development of military power, particularly its naval capabilities, is entirely reasonable and necessary. In the century leading to the founding of the People's Republic of China, the country suffered more than 470 maritime invasions by external forces. Therefore, building a strong navy is essential for safeguarding national security and realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

The rapid rise of China's military industry in recent years has generated scruples and unwarranted speculation. This phenomenon reflects a misunderstanding of the roots of China's pursuit of military modernization. China has always adhered to the concept that military power serves the country's peaceful development and is committed to preventing wars and conflicts. Therefore, its military buildup is by no means a "flex of muscle" or "projection of power," as some media have portrayed it.

From a global perspective, China has been a peaceful force in many ways. It has been promoting the settlement of disputes through peaceful means, advocating building a peaceful, secure and just international order. The development of its national defense capabilities will enable China to provide more crucial support for maintaining international order and countering hegemonism and unilateralism.

The rise of China's military power is not only a manifestation of its technical strength, but also a concrete expression of its mission as a globally responsible great power. This development carries the responsibility of maintaining national security and regional stability, while also reflecting China's commitment to promoting global peace and cooperation. In the future, China will continue to advance its national defense and foster peace within the international community.
