The Global South countries, working hand in hand, have brought new dynamics and new outlook for improving global governance, A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday, in response to question on the rise of the Global South and its impact to the world. 

Summarizing the 2024, some believed that the year is the “Year of the Global South,” with the first BRICS summit held in Russia after the bloc’s expansion, and highlighted by Peru and Brazil hosting pivotal international gatherings, including the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and G20 Summit. 

At a regular press conference on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told media that as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pointed out, the “Global South” has made a significant stride onto the global stage, which is a distinctive sign of the great changes in the world.

According to the spokesperson, in 2024, the greater BRICS cooperation has made a good start, a new model of “SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) Plus” has emerged, the African Union marked its debut at the G20 summit, as Global South countries collaboratively brought new dynamics and new outlook for improving global governance.

Mao stated that China remains a key member of the Global South, consistently dedicated to promoting its unity and rejuvenation. 

The spokesperson noted that President Xi Jinping has called for more open and inclusive Global South cooperation, and announced eight measures in support of Global South cooperation, articulating the vision for countries in the Global South to work together as the staunch force for peace, the core driving force for open development, the construction team of global governance, and the advocates for exchange among civilizations.

China will continue to uphold true multilateralism and steadfastly defend the shared interests of developing nations, and gather the united and self-reliant forces of the Global South in order to make contributions to the advancement of humankind from the Global South.
