On December 29, 2024, with the energized operation of all equipment in the 750 kV Desert Substation, the 750 kV Dingzikou Transmission and Transformation Project, a supporting power grid project for the "Shagohuang" large-scale wind power and photovoltaic base in Northwest China's Qinghai, was completed and put into operation, adding another "green power highway" to the development and utilization of new energy and power supply in Qinghai Province. The project will further enhance the main grid structure in the Haixi region of Qinghai, improve the reliability of regional grid power supply and the level of new energy consumption, and promote the high-quality development of new energy in Qinghai and the green transformation of the local economic development.

The 750 kV Dingzikou power transmission and transformation project is located in Lenghu Town, Mangya City, Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. It is a key energy project that serves the construction of the national "Shagohuang" large-scale wind power and photovoltaic base and accelerates the creation of a new electricity system in Qinghai. The project was launched in August 2023. During this phase of the project, there will be construction of a new 750 kV desert substation, two 2100 MVA main transformers and two 750 kV lines to connect to the 750 kV Yuka substation. In addition, 10 330 kV lines will be built to connect to the surrounding new energy collection stations and main grid substations. After the project is put into operation, it can meet the needs of the Mangya Lenghu wind, solar, and gas storage integrated park for new energy transmission, serve the national "Shagohuang" large-scale wind power and photovoltaic base project and other key energy projects in the province, and connect 4 million kilowatts of wind power, and reserve space for the subsequent development of new energy in the Haixi region of Qinghai.
"Qinghai's new energy installed capacity has entered a stage of rapid growth since the full construction of the 'Shagohuang' large base project. The newly added new energy installed capacity has exceeded 20 million kilowatts, and the scale of new energy installed capacity has nearly doubled in the past three years. We are fully committed to serving the construction of the 'Shagohuang' large base, and have started construction of 15 supporting power grid projects such as the 750 kV Kunlun Mountain and Hongqi projects to better meet the needs of new energy grid connection and consumption, and promote large-scale optimization of power system resources," said He Enjia, director of the Construction Department of the State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Company, noting that the completion and operation of the 750 kV Dingzikou transmission and transformation project will expand Qinghai's 750 kV backbone grid by 230 kilometers to the west, open up the transmission channel between the northwest of the Qaidam Basin and the Qinghai main grid, and accelerate the construction of a green power grid "ecosystem" in the Haixi region of Qinghai.

Since the 14th Five-Year Plan, State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Company has expanded its grid investment and construction scale year by year, with a total investment of 35.64 billion yuan (≈4.87 billion USD) in grid construction, 257 new and continued 35 kV and above grid projects, and accelerated the construction of key energy projects such as the Yuguo Second Circuit and the Walang Pumped Storage Power Station, and promoted the inclusion of the second and third UHV channels in the province into the national plan. At the same time, State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Company coordinated and balanced the efficient development and utilization of hydropower and new energy, deepened the application of multi-energy complementary coordinated regulation technology, improved the coordinated balance strategy of source, grid, load and storage, and improved the level of power trading services, so as to better serve the overall energy supply in Qinghai and help build the national clean energy industry highland.
