Nearly 7,000 intangible cultural heritage (ICH) events and Spring Festival galas set to be held in villages nationwide were revealed at a press conference held by China's Ministry of Cultural and Tourism on Tuesday in Beijing at a press conference.
With China's Spring Festival becoming a worldwide ICH legacy in December 2024, the ministry has decided to make "ICH" the main theme for Spring Festival related events across the country.
Nearly 7,000 ICH events will be held during the holiday season, said Hu Yan, deputy director of the Ministry's Intangible Cultural Heritage Department.
On January 21, national-level ICH lanterns gathered from 15 provinces will be exhibited in Zigong, Southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Another program, "Spring Festival in thousands of homes" will also be launched in Handan, Hebei Province, to engage people in creating their own modern and traditional takes on nianhua, an ICH legacy also known as Chinese Spring Festival Painting.
Hu said that this Spring Festival season's events will exhibit how Chinese ICH treasures have been "creatively transformed to get closer to people's everyday lives."
Aimed at promoting the cultural symbol that is the Spring Festival, digital products such as "AI New Rear greetings" and "AI New Year talks" will also be launched online under the guidance of the ministry.
Other than members of the ICH sector, the press conference was also attended by representatives of the Ministry's Public Service Department, Industrial Development Department and also Resource Development Department.
A "Village Gala" is being promoted by the Public Service Department. The Zhang Guying Folk Village in Yueyang, Hunan Province, has been chosen as the main venue for events.
At the site, local classic Spring Festival dishes like pork bacon and farmhouse dried bamboo shoots will be prepared for visitors.
Meanwhile, modern AI fireworks will also be used to create a festive ambiance, revealing an indigenous, green Chinese rural lifestyle.
Collaborating with China's General Administration of Sport, the Ministry's Industrial Development Department has designed a "traveling with sports" event.
According to different upcoming winter sports competitions, the event aims to invite people to take part in various sports at different winter events.
All these events will be held in China until March 1. Beyond these domestic events, more than 400 Spring Festival events will be held in around 70 countries worldwide.
"For the upcoming festival, we have organized an event combining Suzhou embroidery and gaming in Hungary to exhibit the creative aesthetics of traditional Chinese culture," Zhu Yan, the director of the Suzhou Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism, told the Global Times.
