In response to a question about a Bloomberg report that the European Union's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said "Who is laughing on the side or looking at the side is China… It's really benefiting from the US having a trade war with Europe", Mao Ning, spokesperson from China's Ministry of Commerce, said on Friday that China has repeatedly emphasized that there are no winners in tariff wars and trade wars, and that we will not comment on how the US and Europe get along with each other, but we are opposed to them making an issue out of China.
According to Bloomberg, Kallas made the remarks on Thursday on the sidelines of a Group of Seven meeting in Canada, and came hours after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 200 percent tariff on wine, champagne and other alcoholic beverages from France and elsewhere in the EU.
Mao noted that the US and Europe are both important economies in the world and have the responsibility to maintain the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, rather than transferring conflicts.
