Recently, a charging and swapping virtual power plant (VPP) with a regulating capacity of 20,000 kilowatts was put into operation in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. On March 18, 2025, State Grid staff issued online instructions, and the charging and swapping companies responded within 10 seconds, guiding the charging and swapping stations to participate in grid interaction through the new energy platform.
It has been reported that the charging and swapping virtual power plant is a power load mutual assistance system formed by power grid enterprises and new energy vehicle charging and swapping enterprises. In this new type of power grid system, charging and swapping enterprises are both electricity users and mobile energy storage terminals. When the power grid needs it, charging and swapping stations can flexibly regulate the load and even discharge in reverse.
At present, 68 charging and swapping stations in Suzhou have been connected to the new power load management system, forming a charging and swapping virtual power plant with an adjustable capacity of no less than 20,000 kilowatts. The charging power adjustment speed of a single charging and swapping station can reach the level of within seconds. At present, Suzhou boasts over 600,000 new energy vehicles and over 100 charging and swapping stations. The interaction between electric vehicles and their related facilities and the urban power grid will become a norm. Xiong Bin, Director of the Marketing Department of State Grid Suzhou Power Supply Company, stated that virtual power plant technology can efficiently aggregate dispersed charging and swapping resources, making the new energy power batteries of charging and swapping stations the "power bank" of the city.
