Severe flooding caused by torrential rains in Uganda's capital, Kampala, on Wednesday morning has claimed the lives of two children, with fears of further casualties, a humanitarian relief agency reported.

Irene Nakasiita, spokesperson for the Uganda Red Cross Society, said in a statement that the two children were found dead after floodwaters engulfed their home in the Mulimira zone of Bukoto, a suburb of Kampala.

The heavy rains, which began around 5 a.m. local time (0200 GMT), triggered flooding in several areas of Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono, cutting off roads and paralyzing transportation and business activities.

"Our response team was called to support the community. Many houses are flooded, and household property has been destroyed," she added.

Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said the floods had rendered several roads impassable, leading to severe traffic congestion.

"We urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution and patience until the water subsides. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas, as vehicles can become buoyant and lose traction," Kananura said. "It is better to delay your journey or postpone it altogether than to risk your life. Let us prioritize safety and wait for the water to recede," he added.

The Uganda Meteorological Services has warned of intensified rainfall across several parts of the East African nation during the current rainy season, which could result in disasters such as floods, landslides, and lightning, potentially leading to loss of life.
