In response to US defense secretary's scheduled visit to the Philippines to discuss China's activities in the South China Sea, the US support of the Philippine armed forces and the claims made by the Philippine Ambassador to the US, Senior Colonel Wu Qian, a Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson, said at a regular press conference on Thursday that US-Philippines military cooperation must not harm other countries' security interests or the peace and stability of the region.
"By the way, looking at history, the US has an astonishing record of breaking promises and betraying allies," Wu said.
In response to a Global Times question about how the Chinese People's Liberation Army will deal with experts' analyses that the Philippines and the US could conduct more military exercises, after the two countries' armies recently carried out three-week joint drill, Wu said that "We always oppose interference by countries outside the region when it comes to the South China Sea issue."
The Chinese military will take all necessary measures to defend national interests and safeguard peace and stability in the region, Wu said.
