The Chinese Embassy in Myanmar on Friday issued a statement, reminding Chinese nationals in Myanmar to take precautions against earthquakes and secondary disasters after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar earlier on Friday.

The earthquake has so far caused severe damages to buildings in multiple areas, including Sagaing, Mandalay, and Shan state. Bridges, roads and other infrastructure have also sustained varying degrees of damage. According to official information from Myanmar, the possibility of strong aftershocks occurring in the short term cannot be ruled out, the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar said.

The Chinese embassy and consulates in Myanmar promptly activated their emergency response mechanisms, closely monitoring the earthquake disaster and the situation of Chinese nationals affected in Myanmar, and are making all-out efforts to carry out response measures.

The embassy reminded Chinese nationals to strengthen personal safety precautions, stay informed about earthquake self-rescue knowledge, and appropriately stock up on drinking water, food, emergency supplies, and disaster relief supplies.

It also reminded Chinese nationals to closely monitor earthquake developments, weather alerts, and disaster prevention information, keep communication devices accessible and functional, and take precautions against aftershocks, landslides, fires, infectious diseases, and other secondary disasters.

Chinese nationals should also follow the evacuation arrangements and guidance issued by local authorities, cooperate with on-site management personnel, and relocate to safe areas as soon as possible, according to the statement.

The embassy also listed hotlines for Chinese nationals and asked them to promptly report to the local authorities and seek assistance from the Chinese embassy or consulates in Myanmar, in case of emergency.
