The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (China Navy) launched its official account on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday, marking the first such account established by a service or arm of the Chinese military on an international social platform.
The blue checkmark "✔" next to the account indicates its official verification, while the background image features a dual-aircraft carrier formation.
So far, the account has released two posts. The latest one reads: "We are the Chinese Navy. From escort missions in the Gulf of Aden to overseas rescue operations, from far-sea medical services to humanitarian evacuations, we sail across the oceans with responsibility and hope. We are guardians of sovereignty and every inch of our territory, as well as partners in building a maritime community with a shared future."
Chinese military affairs expert Zhang Junshe told the Global Times on Monday that this move represents another concrete step by the Chinese military to engage with the world, demonstrating an attitude of transparency and openness. "Using an international social platform to directly introduce in English about Chinese naval developments, equipment, and international military cooperation helps the global community better understand the Chinese Navy, which could also strengthen its connection with the world on social media," Zhang said.
Regarding the Chinese Navy being the first military service to open such an account, Zhang attributed this to the navy's inherently international role. "Navel vessels are like mobile territory, and the Chinese Navy's vessels navigate oceans worldwide. Since 2008, when the Chinese Navy began escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and off Somalia, it has continuously conducted joint exercises, training, and international rescue operations with other navies," he explained.
"Therefore, the Chinese Navy can share updates on joint drills, port visits, and real-time operational activities-such as evacuations and disaster relief-on X, enhancing global awareness of its role and contributions."
"We welcome navies from other countries to follow and engage with the Chinese Navy on X," the military affairs expert added.
Prior to this, the Beijing Xiangshan Forum and China Bugle had already opened official X accounts in August and September 2024 respectively. Zhang noted that these initiatives provide additional channels for the international community to learn about the Chinese military, helping to improve public understanding of the PLA.
