In response to a media question regarding Canada's claim of a WeChat "information operation" by China targeting the federal election of Canada, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Canada said that "I would like to emphasize that it is simply absurd and unjustified to launch groundless smear and attack against the Chinese government on the basis of individual remarks on a social media platform. China firmly opposes this and will never accept it."
On April 7, the Privy Council Office of Canada claimed in a news release that a Canadian agency found that a news account on WeChat, allegedly linked to the Chinese government, had published inaccurate stories about Liberal Party leader Mark Carney. The agency believes that in the context of Canada's 45th federal election, this "information operation" aimed to influence the Chinese community in Canada.
In response, the spokesperson for the Chinese embassy said that I am not aware of the so-called "information operation" claimed by the Canadian side.
The Canadian federal election is the internal affairs of Canada. China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and has never interfered in Canada's internal affairs, nor is it interested in doing so, the spokesperson noted.
"At the same time, we firmly oppose linking Canada's federal election with matters related to China, with a view of smearing and slandering China. This will not be helpful to the sound and stable development of China-Canada relations," the spokesperson said.
