The Hangzhou Municipal Health Commission in East China's Zhejiang Province has conducted an investigation into suspected illegal surrogacy activities at two rental properties in Gongshu and Xihu districts, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

Recently, anti-trafficking volunteers discovered that an illegal surrogacy agency in Hangzhou was engaged in egg retrieval, embryo transplantation and cultivation, and the agency was also suspected of buying and selling birth certificates, according to China News.

Hangzhou Municipal Health Commission reported on Tuesday that it received a phone tip-off alleging suspected illegal surrogacy activities in two rental houses located in Gongshu district and Xihu district on Monday afternoon.

The commission took the matter seriously and immediately dispatched law enforcement officers from local health departments to the scene, coordinating with public security authorities to conduct an investigation.

At the scene, officers discovered medical equipment and drugs related to assisted reproductive technology. The premises involved were sealed off on the spot, and the related medical devices and items were confiscated.

Further actions will be taken in accordance with laws and regulations, based on the findings of the ongoing investigation, according to the commission.
