The US media on Thursday has reported at least three plane accidents: one helicopter crash in the Hudson River that killed all six people on board, multiple injuries resulting from a small plane crash in South Georgia, and American Airlines jets that clipped wings on a taxiway at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington.
A sight-seeing helicopter crash in Hudson River killed all 6 aboard Thursday afternoon, media reported. The incident occurred at around 3:17 pm near the Holland Tunnel ventilation shaft in Jersey City, not far from River Drive South and Newport Parkway, near the Water's Soul sculpture, CBS reported.
According to New York Times, Agustín Escobar, a Siemens executive from Spain, was sightseeing in New York City with his family when their helicopter crashed, killing everyone on board, citing senior law enforcement officials.
US President Donald Trump called the crash "terrible" on Truth Social and said the "footage of the accident is horrendous." God bless the families and friends of the victims, he wrote, the NBC report said.
According to NBC report, the helicopter took off from lower Manhattan, data from the ABS-D Exchange shows. It traveled north along the Hudson River and crashed while it was returning south.
The helicopter involved was a Bell 206, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash, CBS report said.
Wang Yanan, chief editor of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told the Global Times the helicopter crash is likely due to a technical failure, possibly a major issue with the power or transmission system, which is related to maintenance and support.
Also on Thursday, multiple people were injured when a small plane crashed in South Georgia, according to local media WALB.
The plane crashed around 4:15 pm in Folkston, right on the border with Florida, according to a report from WJAX, a CBS affiliate in Jacksonville, Florida, the media report said.
Six people were on board, including two children, the WALB cited the Charlton County Sheriff's Office as saying. Four adults were taken to the hospital for treatment. Two men were seriously injured and the two children were taken to the hospital out of precaution, the report said.
Separately, two American Airlines jets, including one carrying at least six members of Congress from New York and New Jersey, clipped wings on a taxiway at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington on Thursday, officials said, according to New York Times.
The six House members were departing for Kennedy International Airport when the right winglet of their Embraer E175, which was stationary, was clipped by a regional jet heading to Charleston, S.C., officials said.
"I've been flying for over 10 years to Washington," Representative Grace Meng, Democrat of New York, was quoted by New York Times, during a Zoom call with reporters while waiting for another flight. "This has never happened to me."
A collision is a typical aviation management issue, and the airport air traffic control should bear responsibility, Wang said.
